If you want to run Windows on your Mac there are two ways to do it. One is to partition your main drive using the built-in Bootcamp Assistant and then install Windows on the partition that doesn’t house macOS. You can then boot into whichever operating system you choose.

While that method means running Windows natively and so is optimal in terms of performance, it means you have to reboot every time you want to move between operating systems and you can’t, for example, copy and paste between macOS and Windows. If you want to run Windows and macOS side by side, you’ll need to create a Windows virtual machine for Mac.

What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine (VM) is a computer that’s created in software and looks and feels just like a real PC. But it runs inside a Mac application. The whole virtual machine, with the operating system and all its applications, is stored inside one big file on your Mac. That means you can have multiple virtual machines on the same Mac. Once you launch it and ‘boot’ the virtual PC, Windows VM on Mac behaves like any other Windows machine, except that it’s running inside a window on your Mac.

If you have two screens connected to your Mac, you can have macOS on one and Windows on the other. Or you can use Mission Control to swipe between them. A virtual machine can share accessories like printers and external storage with your Mac, and you can copy and paste between the two operating systems. You can even set up the virtual machine to use Mac keyboard shortcuts instead of their Windows equivalents.

Can I run a virtual machine on my Mac?

As long as your Mac has an Intel processor (and it will have unless it’s more than 12 years old), in theory it can run a virtual machine. However, running a virtual machine alongside macOS needs lots of memory (at least 8GB in total, and more if you want to run more than one virtual machine) and at least two processor cores. You’ll also need at least 16-20GB of hard drive space, and that’s before you start installing applications and saving files. Most modern Macs should run any of the virtual machine applications described here without a problem.

The other thing you’ll need is a copy of Windows. Virtual machine applications don’t come with Windows installers, so you’ll need to supply your own, along with a licence key.

Best virtual machine software for Mac

There are three contenders here: Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, and VirtualBox. We’ll discuss Virtual Box in the next section.

Parallels Desktop 13

The latest version of Parallels Desktop has support for features in the latest Macs, like the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar. It also allows you to make the Windows desktop ‘invisible’ when you’re running apps, so it looks like you’re just running Windows apps in macOS. Or, if you prefer, you can shrink Windows desktop down to a thumbnail preview, so it doesn’t get in the way but you can keep an eye on what it’s doing.

Of course, virtual machines aren’t just about running Windows on your Mac. Parallels Desktop allows you to install Linux, or a different version of macOS, say a beta of the next version if you don’t want to install it on your Mac. If you’ve previously installed Windows on a Boot Camp partition, you can use that partition as a virtual machine, allowing you to boot into it from within Parallels without re-booting your Mac.

Touch Bar support includes functions in Microsoft Office apps, as well as Windows Task Bar.

When it comes to performance, Parallels Desktop is about as good as it gets for virtual machines. That means you can run most applications just fine, but demanding 3D graphics-intensive games, and other apps that place lots of demands on the CPU and GPU are still a bit of a struggle. If you want to run those in Windows, you’re still better off using Boot Camp.

VMWare Fusion

The other main contender when it comes to running a virtual machine on your Mac is VMWare Fusion. It comes in two versions, Fusion 10, which costs about the same as Parallels Desktop, and Fusion 10 Pro, which is more expensive but adds feature aimed at enterprise customers, such as support for managing virtual servers.

In terms of features, there’s little to choose between Parallels Desktop and Fusion. Like its rival, Fusion allows you to choose between running Windows inside a window on your Mac (or full-screen if you prefer) and in what it calls Unity mode, where the operating system disappears and Windows apps look like they’re running natively on the Mac. That means you can run Windows and Mac apps alongside each other and switch between them seamlessly. You can also copy and paste between Mac and Windows, share peripherals, and map Mac keyboard shortcuts in Windows.

Support for OpenGL and DX10, as well as Apple’s Metal technology means that playing resource-hungry games is theoretically possible. But, as with Parallels, performance in the latest games lags behind Boot Camp and may prove frustrating.

The latest version of Fusion adds support for the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar.

Choosing between Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion may be as much a matter of a preference for one or the other’s user interface. They have very similar features, and cost almost the same. Fortunately, both offer free trials — Parallels for 14 days and Fusion for 30 days — so you can download each one and try them out before making a decision on which to buy.

Best free virtual machine software for Mac

If you want to run a virtual machine on your Mac but can’t stretch to the $70 for Parallels or Fusion, there is a third option — VirtualBox. Owned by Oracle and made available as open-source software for personal or educational use, VirtualBox won’t cost you a penny if you fall into either of those two categories.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that VirtualBox, because it’s open source and free lacks all of the polish of Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion. While it does the basics competently, it’s much less user friendly and much less easy to use than the other two. And while there is help available online from other users, there’s no official support if you run into problems. And remember, while VirtualBox itself is free, you’ll still need to supply your own copy of Windows. Alternatively, you could use VirtualBox to run Linux on your Mac, instead of Windows.

Alternatives to a virtual machine

As we mentioned earlier, the alternative to running a virtual machine on your Mac is to partition your main drive using the built-in Boot Camp Assistant (it’s in the Utilities folder). You can then install Windows or Linux, or another version on macOS, on the other partition.

Boot Camp Assistant is very easy to use and once you’ve set it up, booting into, say, Windows, is just like using it natively on a PC. That means, of course, that you won’t be able to copy and paste between Mac and Windows, and you won’t be able to use external storage that’s formatted in APFS or Mac OS Extended, but Windows will run faster than it does on a virtual machine.

If you plan to use Boot Camp Assistant to partition your main drive, remember to back it up first. Partitioning a drive is not quite major surgery, but it definitely carries the risk of losing data.

How to make space for a virtual machine on your Mac

Depending on how many applications you plan to install on your virtual machine and what you plan to use it for, you may need tens of gigabytes of free space on your Mac. If space is tight, don’t worry, there’s plenty you can do to make room. As a first step, we recommend installing CleanMyMac X. It scans your Mac and looks for files that can be safely deleted. These include “junk” system files like cache files and other temporary files that are still hanging around, as well as language support files, and data in Photos and iTunes you may not need. Once it’s scanned your Mac and found all those files, you can delete them all with a click, or review the results of the scan and decide for yourself what you want to trash.

CleanMyMac can also uninstall files completely, getting rid of all the files that are left if you just drag and app to the Trash, and highlight large and old files that you haven’t opened for a while. Сегодня я расскажу как установить Xcodeна OS X.

Первая и самая главная составляющая – Apple MacBook / Mac Mini/ iMac.
Не стоит на этом месте приунывать, есть решение и для любителей Windows!
Поэтому те, кто имеет вышеназванное оборудование, могут смело переходить к следующему шагу . Остальные читают далее.

Устанавливает Mac OS X

Итак, для установки OS X на Windows нам необходимо:

  1. Ноутбук или настольный компьютер, поддерживающий виртуализацию (большинство современных компьютеров).
  2. 2 Гб оперативной памяти или больше.
  3. VMWare Workstation – известная программа для виртуализации систем. Это платная программа, но, немного поискав, можно скачать ее бесплатно(торренты никто не отменял).
  4. – операционная система, желательно собранная специально под VMWare . Она должна быть не ниже 10.8.4.
  5. Процессор должен поддерживать виртуализацию.
  6. В BIOS включена поддержка виртуализации(обязательно проверьте).
  7. Количество ядер выставляйте согласно количеству ваших физических ядер.

Поехали настраивать:

  1. Качаем и устанавливаем VMware Workstation. На состояние Январь 2014 года я взял VMware Workstation v10.0.1. Русифицируем ее (Если есть желание. Для этого предварительно отключим все процессы vmware в Диспетчере задач).
  2. Качаем и Распаковываем файлы для патча(анлока) VMware (обычно идет в комплекте с Операционной системой). Заходим в папку, соответствующей нашей версии VmWare. Затем выбираем папку соответствующей нашей операционной системе и запускаем файл “install” от имени администратора и ждем закрытия окна. Если у вас никоим образом не получается воспользоваться этим методом, то в папке есть Патч (VMware Unlocker – Hardware Virtualization Bypasser)
  3. Распаковываем архив со скачанной Операционной системой.
  4. Заходим в распакованную папку и запускаем “OS X Mavericks.vmx”.

Откроется наша виртуальная машина VMware

Никаких настроек не производим, она сама выберет подходящие, и нажимаем кнопку ”Включить виртуальную машину”. При первом запуске указываем – “I copied it”.

Начался запуск. Если у Вас долго висит окно с Яблоком, значит вы плохо пропатчили виртуальную машину. Внимательно прочтите инструкцию к вашей версии машины и повторите действия снова, до победного конца!

Итак, система запустилась!

Меняем разрешение и прочие настройки на свой вкус, смотрим, наслаждаемся, но всё это нашей цели не касается

Внимание! Для того, чтобы скачать последнюю версию Xcode необходимо, чтобы работал интернет в OS X. Когда я поставил впервые, у меня он не работал. На следующее утро всё заработало Если не получается, пишите, разберемся.

Устанавливаем Xcode.

Открываем AppStore и ищем Xcode. (для установки необходимо будет зарегистрироваться и получить Apple ID, если его у вас еще нет)

Установка пошла. Среда разработки Xcode занимает 2,09 Гб, поэтому надеюсь у Вас безлимитный интернет . Скорость загрузки напрямую зависит от вашего тарифа.

Приложения для iOS тестируются в Xcode, а для этого нужен Mac. Но не расстраивайтесь, если вы не являетесь счастливым обладателем Mac’a, как и я, то вам просто нужен эмулятор macOS для Windows.

Сразу хочу сказать, что если у вас нет аккаунта разработчика Apple Developer, то вы не сможете протестировать игру на реальном устройстве iPhone или iPad. Тесты можно будет проводить только в среде Xcode.

Что бы установить macOS на Windows, вам понадобиться следующее:

  • Эмулятор VMware Workstation 12 Player + Patch
  • Образ macOS Sierra. Здесь я хотел бы пояснить один момент. Дело в том, что Xcode устанавливается только на macOS последней версии. Поэтому нужна именно macOS Sierra. На момент выхода статьи: версия Xcode — 8.1 и версия macOS Sierra — 10.12.1

Пошаговая установка macOS Sierra на VMware на Windows

1) Извлеките архив macOS 10.12 Sierra.rar, начиная с первого.

2) Установите VMware-player. Затем извлеките архив Patch Tool.zip, откройте папку unlocker208 и запустите файл win-install.cmd от имени администратора:

3) Откройте VMware Player. Вам нужно будет ввести e-mail:

4) Затем нажмите «Create new virtual mahine»:

  • Guest OS: Apple Mac OS X
  • Version: macOS 10.12

5) Дайте имя новой виртуальной машине:

  • введите имя;
  • нажмите кнопку «Browse» и создайте папку, в которую будет установлена macOS Sierra (можно оставить путь по умолчанию);
  • на следующем шаге отметьте пункт «Store virtual disk as a single file».

6) Настройте виртуальную машину:

  • Нажмите «Edit Virtual Machine Setting»;
  • выберите «Hard Disk (SATA) 40 GB»;
  • нажмите кнопку «Remove».
  • нажмите кнопку Add;
  • выберите Hard Disk;
  • выберите Hard Disk — SATA;
  • отметьте «Use an Existing Virtual Disk».


Нажмите «Browse» и выберите файл образа macOS 10.12 Sierra Final by TechReviews.vmdk:

9) Вы можете настроить Ram от 2.56 до 4 Гб и процессор — от 2 до 4 ядра:

Но не у всех есть мощный компьютер способный тянуть эмуляцию на полную катушку, так что лучше настроить:

  • виртуальную память на 2GB, а не на 4GB;
  • процессор на 2 ядра, а не на 4;
  • используйте USB 2.0, вместо USB 3.0 (с ним бывают проблемы).

10) Отредактируйте файл VMX.
Щелкните правой кнопкой мыши на файле vmx (в папке, которую вы создали на шаге 5) затем выберите Открыть с помощью «Блокнот»:

Скопируйте этот код: smc.version = '0' и вставьте его последней строчкой:
Сохраните файл.

Всё! Теперь запустите эмулятор кнопкой «Play virtual machine».

Если у вас возникает ошибка при запуске эмуляции, значит вам нужно включить в BIOS так называемую опцию intel virtualization или intel virtual technology:

Установить Xcode

При первом запуске macOS вам нужно будет пройти этапы настроек Apple. Здесь лучше сразу выполнить вход в Apple ID. Вы можете пропустить этот шаг, но идентификатор iTunes (или Apple ID) все равно нужен, что бы установить Xcode из App Store.

Если у вас нет яблочных устройств, то, скорее всего, нет и Apple ID, зарегистрировать его можно на сайте Apple .

Apple ID — это e-mail, который вы указали при регистрации.

Так же нужно будет создать аккаунт учётной записи, пароль можно установить просто 1. Затем для входа в систему введите пароль — 1

Итак, вы сделали Mac из своего компьютера на Windows. Отлично!

Теперь жмите на иконку App Store -> В поиске введите «xcode» -> Установите программу Xcode.

Экспорт проекта iOS из Clickteam Fusion 2.5 и запуск в Xcode

Выберите тип построения проекта — iOS final Xcode project. Clickteam Fusion 2.5 предложит вам выбрать один из размеров экрана.

  • 320×480 — старые модели iPhone
  • 640×960 — iPhone 4/4S
  • 768×1024 — iPad, iPad 2, iPad mini
  • 640×1136 — iPhone 5, iPhone 5C/5S, iPhone SE.
  • 1536×2048 — iPad (3gen), iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini (Retina), iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad Pro.
  • Вторая строка — это те же самые устройства в положении landscape.

Нажмите File ->Build ->Application и вы получите zip-архив проекта.

Важно: название проекта не должно содержать русских букв.

Я подготовил такой файл для тех, кто ещё не обзавёлся экспортом Clicteam Fusion 2.5 для iOS (скачать App-iOS.zip)

Далее нужно перенести этот zip-архив на Mac. И здесь не получится просто скопировать и вставить файл. Вам нужно скинуть архив на флешку, затем открыть эмулятор, вытащить и снова воткнуть флешку.

Распакованную папку лучше скопировать на рабочий стол и запускать файл с Mac’а, а не с флешки.

Откройте папку и кликните двойным щелчком мыши по файлу с расширением .xcodeproj.

Проект откроется в Xcode. Слева вверху вы можете выбрать устройство для тестирования.

Выберите желаемое устройство и нажмите кнопку Run.
Если нажать и держать лкм в левом нижнем углу кнопки, появиться дополнительное меню.

Когда загрузиться окно симулятора устройства, кликните на иконку приложения.

Что бы закрыть симулятор нажмите Quit в выпадающем меню по клику правой кнопки мыши.

Недостатки:

  • Конечно, приложение будет притормаживать.
  • Невозможно протестировать множественные касания (Multiple Touch).
  • В симуляторе не работают кнопки клавиатуры. Ну, это и понятно, вы же как бы находитесь в iPhone/iPad.
  • И ещё, на всякий случай, в Mac не работает правый Shift.

Но даже несмотря на недостатки, это уже кое-что. И этот способ даёт возможность бесплатно протестировать приложение для iOS.

You can make an app for iOS even if you’re on a PC running Windows 10.

I wish I had known this when I first started because I delayed myself for 3 years before biting the bullet and buying a Mac.

Had I known about running Xcode on Windows or about the solutions below, I might’ve started building iPhone apps much earlier!

Rent a Mac

Before committing to buying a new Mac, you can actually “rent” one for development. You’ll remotely access the Mac and Xcode through your PC.

It’ll be like having the Mac desktop in a window on your Windows Desktop.

The really nice thing about this option is that the cost is really low and it’s the fastest option to get up and running.

If you decide that app development isn’t for you, you just cancel your plan.

2. MacInCloud
This is the most well known service out of the three. You won’t have to install Xcode because it comes preinstalled. You can also do pay-as-you-go so it’s a pretty low commitment. Some people complain that it’s slow but you can try it out for yourself since it’s only about a buck an hour!

3. XcodeClub
XcodeClub is run by Daniel who is a passionate developer himself. From the reviews I see, the service is fast and friendly. The pricing is less flexible than MacInCloud and you’ll have to commit to at least a month.

Virtualize MacOS

If you’re a little more technically savvy, you can use virtualization software and run a “virtual Mac” on your PC.

The services above are essentially doing the same thing on their servers and then they charge you a fee to access the virtual machine.

By setting it up yourself on your own PC, you essentially cut the middle man out of the equation.

Unfortunately it does take a little bit of technical know-how to get this up and running.

The two most popular pieces of software to do virtualization are VirtualBox and VMWare Workstation.

You can download them below and then use Google to find a guide on how to install the latest MacOS (Mojave) with either VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation.

After that, spin up your new virtual Mac and download Xcode. This is as close as you’ll get to running actual Xcode on Windows!

4. VirtualBox
VirtualBox is open source software which means that it’s free. That probably explains why it’s a lot more popular than VMWare Workstation when it comes to running MacOS on your Windows machine!

5. VMWare Workstation
Unfortunately you’ll have to pay for this piece of software and at the time of this writing, a license costs about half the price of a brand new Mac Mini which is perfectly suitable for iOS app development. I would recommend you try VirtualBox first or try to buy a used Mac Mini.

Build a “Hackintosh”

You can also build a “Hackintosh” which is a PC that has been customized to run MacOS.

This requires the most effort out of all the options presented so far but it can work for someone who wants a separate physical computer running MacOS.

7. Hackintosh Subreddit
I love looking for Reddit communities on anything that I’m interested in because there are always interesting conversations happening. Reddit provides a way to have a dialogue with like minded individuals, to get help and to help others!

Third Party Solutions

Lastly, there are many third party solutions that you can use to do iOS development on Windows.

You won’t be using Xcode in these solutions but you’ll be able to generate an app that can run on iOS devices.

Step 1: Initially, download and install VMware or VirtualBox on your Windows computer from the above link.

Step 3:You have to create the virtual machine on your oracle virtual box. For that, you need to open Virtual Box and click New.

Step 4:Now, you will get a new window asking for the name of the new operating system. Enter Name as OSX, Type of the OS as Mac OS X and also enter the Version as Mac OS X (32 bit). Click Next.

Step 5: You need to select the size of RAM for the virtual machine. The sufficient size of memory for Android to run on your Windows computer requires 1024 MB (1 GB). Select the memory size and then click Next.

Step 6: Now, Select and create the type of virtual hard drive file.

Step 7: Select the type of Hardware file as VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image). It is always recommended to go for VDI in terms of ISO image. Click Next.

Step 8: Select the physical hard drive as Dynamically allocated. Now, you need to allocate the file loaction and size of Android from physical hard drive on your device. Then, Click on Create.

Step 9: Now, you have successfully created virtual machine on your virtual box. You need to mount the iso file which is downloaded before. For that, Go to Settings >> Storage >> Load iso File >> Click Ok >> Start.

Step 10: Later, you just follow the on-screen steps of OSX boot as Wizard and then OSX will be installed in Oracle Virtual.

Step 11: Now, go to safari browser in your Virtualbox and open official Apple App store. Sign in using your Apple ID into the App store. You need to enter the Apple ID and password as shown in the image below:

Step 12: After signing, type xcode in the search box in order to get the complete package. It shows you various related apps. Locate Xcode from different apps and click on Free and Download. Then, click OK to download the kit.

Step 13: After completing the installation process, open it from the applications. Now, you need to provide your root credential in order to get access privilege to install Xcode components and also for modifying your system settings. Enter your name and password and press OK.

Step 14: That’s it,. We have now successfully installed the latest Xcode version on your Windows 10, 8/8.1 and 7 PC using desktop virtualization software VMware workstation.

This way you can install Xcode, app development software on your Windows PC or Laptop. Now, you can create new projects and better apps using this interface. As you are running this software on Windows, the performance and speed of Xcode won’t be extremely high.
